Our community was founded in 1860 by William Shannon. He recognized the potentials of the rich soil, which induced our livelihood ~ agriculture and its related industries. To this day farming has been our strength.
Shannon, Illinois is located in Northwestern Illinois with a population of 930. Shannon is a part of the Eastland School District and is known throughout the area as being one of the most financially sound. Our teachers are very caring and experienced. As a result, our students consistently score above average on State and National tests. Shannon is home for several retail businesses and is a 20-minute drive from Freeport, Illinois. There is a variety of churches, clubs and organizations that help to make Shannon a great place to live. For recreation, there are several parks and golf clubs in the area. The closest 18-hole golf course is located approximately 5 miles away at Lake Carroll, which is the largest man-made lake in the state of Illinois. Property owners at Lake Carroll have access to boating, fishing, swimming, and golfing. Fine dining and banquet facilities are available at the Clubhouse located near the golf course.

The popular fruit pie contest is open to the public. Area crafters continue to be part of this event. The BBQ contest has had over 60 teams from 19 states participating and is considered one of the top Barbeque Contests in the U.S. The Shannon contest is unique, in that it is free to the public and people are welcome to mingle among the teams to get a sample of Championship “Q” and learn some of the secrets from the best cooks throughout the U.S. The Shannon Chamber of Commerce will again be selling smoked pork sandwiches and dinners to the public on Friday evening and serving Saturday lunch.

The Shannon Lion’s Club serves a pork chop sandwich supper at the Shannon Lion’s Park. Shannon Lion’s Club and the Shannon Chapter of the American Legion sponsor a fireworks display that rivals many shows seen in larger cities.

Come and discover Polo! Explore this site to learn more about our community. The City of Polo (pop. 2500) is located 2 hours west of Chicago and is nestled among a rural setting. Polo was established in 1857 and takes pride in its past with many properties designated on the National Historic Registry.

The White Pines State Park is located 6 miles east of Polo which boasts a virgin stand of White Pine Forest great for hiking. The park also offers camping, fishing, and picnicking. The rustic lodge offers dining and log cabin rentals from March to December.

The Rock River is also within 10 minutes of Polo offering boating, jet skiing, and fishing.

The Polo community offers an outdoor pool and child’s wading pool, Edgewood Golf Course, two city parks with playground equipment, shelters, ball diamonds, basketball courts,
and picnic areas.
Polo also offers 2 medical clinics, dentist office, pharmacy, and other essential businesses.
